The Joys of Living Alone

More and more people are living alone. The statistics show that one-person households are now the most common type in Canada (2016 census.)

While there is an old stigma that living alone is a last resort — those people are ‘selfish, less secure and will die earlier; sad and lonely’, the reality is that living alone can be a beneficial and highly satisfying way to live.

As a person who has spent most of her time living with someone; parents, siblings, then husband, kids, but now finds herself living alone, I have some perspective to offer.

Living alone has it’s disadvantages to be sure. What I never expected was how much I enjoy living alone.

Living alone equals freedom. There is absolutely no-one else to have to schedule appointments with, to consult about paint colors or where the furniture should go. I can stay up as late as I wish, or go to bed (with a quiet house) at 8 pm if I want.

The house is as messy or as clean as I leave it (unless, of course, my pets decide to be naughty!). My house is quiet (I know I said this twice now but it is one of my favorite things) and organized how I like.

I have book shelves in every room. Also, a favorite thing.

Leftovers are always there when you come home — they haven’t magically been eaten by roomies!
