The Five Keys to Health
In my work as a pharmacist, I have found that health is usually something that people take for granted, until they, or a family member, loses it.
Once disease or disability strikes, one’s previous good fortune of having a healthy body or mind finally strikes home.
What then is health?
The definition of health that I prefer is this:
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” WHO, 1948.
Complete physical, mental and social well-being.
Hmmmm. That is such a great definition. If you really disect the words. Physical. Yes — that is what we normally think of as health.
A properly functioning body, able and willing to do all the tasks it is called upon to do, and to do these tasks with energy and strength.
Mental — yes, our mental health is key. Our bodies can be strong and vital, but if we are suffering with mental illness of any kind — be it depression, anxiety, personality disorders, addictions, body image dsymorphia, etc. The list is long. Getting control or preventing mental illness is an extremely important part of health and wellness.
